halloween
Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31st.
The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people
would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth
century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints.
Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The
evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time,
Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving
jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
It marked a time
of year when seasons changed, but, more importantly, observers also believed the
boundary between this world and the next became especially thin at this time,
enabling them to connect with the dead. This belief is shared by some other
cultures; a similar idea is mentioned around the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur,
which also typically occurs in October and involves saying prayers for the
dead. This is also where Halloween gains its "haunted" connotations.
Thanksgiving
the cornucopia
or the horn of plenty is a typical image of thansgiving
Thanksgiving, which occurs on
the fourth Thursday in November, is based on the colonial Pilgrims' 1621
harvest meal.
It is an annual national holiday in the United States and
Canada celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. In both Canada and America, family and
friends gather for a feast on the holiday. Traditional fare in America
typically includes turkey, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. The holiday moved away
from its religious roots over time, allowing immigrants of every background to
participate in a common tradition. It
is also a day to thank for all the things we have.
What are you thankful for?
